How to Vacay Cheaply on the Mediterranean

It’s almost June, in my head, and I’m thinking that I want time on the Mediterranean with scuba, kayaking, and some lounge time. Which fabulous Mediterranean beach will I be going to? Let’s start with where I’m not going.

  1. Italy is out because they have Great White Sharks. Not that the sharks have ever even killed a person who was just swimming, but I’m not taking any chances. (Of course, anyone who knows anything about sharks would say: If Italy’s got’em so does the rest of the Med. But, I prefer not to think about that.)
  2. France is overrun with people. I love St. Rafael . . . and people, but rows and rows of them, not so much. This also makes it more expensive.
  3. Spain and Greece–see above.

Now, we all understand that this is not a full list of Mediterranean countries, but let’s just move on to Kaş, Turkey. It’s not so easy to get here, and that’s part of the appeal. You fly into a nearby city like Antalya and take the bus or rent a cab.

Kaş is worth it.

  1. You wanna jump off a cliff –you can.
  2. You wanna go scuba diving –you can.
  3. You wanna go kayaking or sailing –you can.
  4. You wanna go hiking –you can.
  5. You wanna NOT see Great White Sharks or any sharks –you can.
  6. You wanna go shopping –you can.

Basically, anything that you want to do in Kaş, they can arrange.

The best time to go is around the beginning of June before the crowds hit. It’s less crowded, and you get the added bonus of the water being so cold that it’s like a cold water plunge pool. And, that’s good for your health. (For those who are leery of the cold, just a bus ride away is deliciously warm water. However, the turtles don’t laze about in the warm water. To swim with one, you’ve got to soak up a lot of sun then jump into the cold water, swim over and say hi.)

We stayed at an awesome Airbnb, cooked most of our meals and enjoyed them from our very own balcony overlooking the harbour. It was cheap and highly enjoyable.

And, all those Turkish towels I bought? Shipped home from the post office for much less than an extra luggage fee on any airline.

This year, I’m going to try hiking.
